How to Structure Owner-Occupied Commercial Real Estate Loans

This article describes how commercial and industrial (C&I) lenders can structure owner-occupied commercial real estate (OO CRE) loans to win borrower business and protect their bank. 

A recent Wall Street Journal article, “Real-Estate Doom Loop Threatens American’s Banks,” noted that banks doubled their CRE lending to $2.2 trillion from 2015 to 2022. Small and medium-sized banks originated most of these loans, and OO CRE loans accounted for approximately $625 billion.
